Traffic signals or traffic management signals are most beneficial in organising the flow of traffic, when followed correctly by motorists.
These devices offer maximum control to roads, especially in various road intersections. These devices relay messages to communicate to the driver of when to stop/go, road closures, or changes in speed for example. Additionally, traffic signals can assign an alternative route for an opposing movement of traffic in a road or road intersection.
Traffic signals are simple since they have an easy-to-understand interphase or design. However, there is also a disadvantage to this system. They may cause an extreme interruption to the heavy flow of traffic due to the crossing of some other minor movements, which otherwise may not be able to move safely on the road.
When traffic signals are appropriately installed, they may be beneficial in increasing the capacity of traffic handling on the road and help in the reduction of road accidents. Furthermore, they are useful in improving the safety and efficiency of both the pedestrian and the vehicular traffic.

The use of Traffic Management signals can also be used in many other working environments, such as in factories on machinery – even at a supermarket checkout!
The use of such signals in a factory environment tend to have 2 or more colours to signify the varying status/process etc. Typical colours are Red/Green for a 2 status beacon or Red/Amber/Green for a 3 status beacon – but this is by no means fixed. The signals and colours are often chosen in accordance with guidelines from standards such as BS EN 842 and BS EN 981, but ultimately dictated by the end users application.
